Sometimes, I getup set like Hell..
Then I hear the Song HOTEL CALIFORNIA from Hell Freezes Over..
I then realize that I have not ridden my Saloon in the Desert..
Which gives me a Moral Boost and a reason to put the Uneasiness to rest..
Bottom-line: To come over a trauma, always think of the catalyst to intensify the reaction to the extent that the trauma disappears leaving behind just POSITIVE ENERGY

My Appointment with the Lord of Seven Hills

24 Sep, 2010: Preethi akka dropped me in her santro at Marathalli. It was raining heavily and I had to do a small jog in the rain to catch the 335E to reach Domlur. From there it was a one man rain marathon to home. Then picked my bag and continued to Majestic to catch the bus to Bangalore.

25 Sep, 2010, Stepped down the bus at Tirupathi bus stand and got the tickets to Tirumala and started the pilgrimage up hill and checked into the room at Vallabacharya Math. It was a time for some Ginger tea and then rest for a couple of hours since We (Me, Ram and JP) had to wait for a couple of friends from Hyderabad (Ravi and Vinay). The felloz finally arrived at 10:00 hours.
We then headed for the place to shave our heads and had a dip at the pushkarini. The water at the pushkarini was crystal clear and very well maintained. After that we headed for the sheegra dharshan queue At 13:00 hours. Lord Venkateshwara gave us the darshan at around 17:30 hours. We were given Sakarai Pongal as prasadam inside the temple and after that we headed to the counter to collect the ladoos, check out the room and headed back to Tirupathi. The Deccan Chargers had to head back to Hyderabad and the other two Royal Challengers members were too hungry and tired, so leaving them at the Hotel Woodlands, I went to Alamelumangapuram to get the dharshan of Godess Padmavathi at 21:00 Hours. It was the temple closing time but I was happy get the dharshan of Raja Gopuram and headed back to the bus stand and headed back to Bangalore.

What does the term mean?
Rash driving of Vajra buses. If you have nerves of steel, then you can sit in the buses else the blood pressure will shoot up for sure. Especially the route from KBS-Kadugodi.
Today morning, the bus in which I was travelling tried to overtake another one at Kundanahalli signal to take a left in ITPL road where in the rear view mirror of the other bus kissed the glass exactly where I was sitting.
In the evening, the honorable driver showed his driving skills the same way the mini cooper is driven in the Italian Job.

JavaScript: Checkbox - Select All

A very common scenario in a HTML table with check-box(s), a select / un-select all. Here is a simple approach to do that using JavaScript viz.,
1. Let's have two links (like gmail) to Select All and UnSelect All.
2. Let the two functions call a single function to do the operation. The function will accept the following parameters viz.,

1. A boolean value where true => Select / false => UnSelect
2. The name mentioned for the checkbox.

We might come across a scenario where in the JavaScript code being written should be compactable in IE and non IE browsers. A very simple check can be made for this and the snippet is as follows viz.,

JavaScript: document Object

The document is the root object that can consists of all the elements enclosed within HTML, HEAD and BODY tags in a web page.

The most common functions to get the element(s) / the element properties are as follows viz.,

document.getElementById
document.getElementsByName
document.getElementsByTagName

The document.getElementById returns the require object of the element searched.

The other two functions return an array object which can be looped to get the individual elements.

DELL Studio 14: Switching OEM Keys

The following steps are to be followed to switch the ways to use the function keys in a DELL Studio 14 Laptop.

Open the Control Panel.
Click on the “Commonly Used Mobility Settings” under the Hardware and Sound, this opens a Windows Mobility Center window. Select the Function Key Behaviour in the Function Key Row.

The settings will take effect.

IIS 7: Access restriction

Here is another simple glitch and a tweak that I had experienced in IIS 7 in Windows 7.
When trying to code a simple html page and save it in the root of the IIS (C:\inetpub\wwwroot) folder, there is an access restriction error.

Root Cause: The logged in user is not granted the complete administrator credentials even if the user name is a part of the administrator user group.
The following steps are to be followed to do the fix viz.,

Navigate to the root path and right click on the wwwroot folder –> Properties.
Navigate to the securities tab and click on the Edit button under the Group or User Names list.
In the Permissions dialog that opens, click on the Add Button.
Mention the user name in the textbox titled “Enter the object names to select” and click Ok button.
Now in the Permissions dialog, select the Checkbox against the Full Control and Apply the settings.

Now, the user will be able to save the files in the root folder.

IE8: Open Popup in Tab

As a rookie surfer, I was a little confused why a popup is always opened in a new page? I am using IE 8 for browsing and finally today found out the setting to change.

Navigate to Tools –> Internet Options.
Under the General tab, click on the settings button in the Tabs area.
In the Tab Browser Settings, select the radio button “Always open pop-ups in a new tab”.
Click on Ok for the settings to take effect.

Phew… One small tweak in the settings, to avoid opening new windows in IE… :).

Splitting Harddrive Space

The main scenario that led me to share this thought with you is the single partition with the complete disk space of 500 gigs that was supplied with my new Laptop. I took some time in figuring out the steps to the solution. Well it goes this way.,

Right click on the My Computer icon, click on Mange.
Select Storage –> Disk Management from the left pane of the Computer Management window.
Right click on the required drive (only C:\ will be available by default) and select shrink volume.
Enter the amount of bytes to shrink and click on ok. After the process is complete, the free space will be shown in the Computer Management window
Right click on the Free Space and select New Simple Volume to create a new partition.

Installing IIS in Windows 7

The following are the sequence of steps to be followed to install / enable IIS in Windows 7 (Home Premium Edition).

Open the Control Panel.
Click and open the Programs option.
Click on the Program and features.
Click on the “Turn Windows features on or off”
Select the Internet Information Services and click on Ok button.

There will be a progress message displayed and the IIS would be up and running.

To check if the installation is completed success, open the internet explorer and type http://localhost in the URL and the following will be the resultant screen

web 2.0: Table using UL and LI tags

The following is a simple web 2.0 implementation to separate the presentation code (CSS) and the actual data (HTML). The same can be accomplished using the <ul> and <li> tags of HTML.

The following is the code in for the CSS viz.,

.columnTwo{ width: 100px; }

Here I am displaying two columns with a few rows. The following is the HTML code viz.,

The strategy is quite simple viz.,

Clear the floating elements on both the sides by using clear: both for the style definition in the UL tag.
Mention the float position as left for the style definition in the LI tag.

I wish to share with you my understanding on the advantages of the web 2.0 standards. Listing a few of them below .,

Search Engine Optimization

The page is much meaningful with a lot of programming content than the style since the styling features are separated from the presentation file. This gives other programs on the web to easily interact with the page content and keep a record. One such program that most widely accesses the website is the Search Engine.

Thus a cleaner page => Faster and better access.

Page Weight

The main code content is relatively much lighter to load. The reason being, the CSS is cached by the browser and only the HTML content has to be loaded each time a request is sent.

Thus extensive use of the CSS brings down the programmed page size.

Ease to maintain

The code will be well structured and thus easy to maintain.

Accessibility

Since the HTML is meaningful, by separating the CSS from the presentation code, the site will be more accessible.

Haier CE100 – Troubleshooting

The scenario is that the CE100 Dialler is installed but there is no signal for the connection to be activated.

The problem occurred when trying to install the driver and use the same in a machine with Microsoft Windows Windows 7.

Solutions that did not work are as follows viz.,

Un-Install the software from the control panel.
Uninstall the program from the control panel and restart the program.
Uninstall the program from the program menu installation.
Uninstall the program from the program menu installing and restarting the machine.

Solution that worked is as follows viz.,

Open the device manger.
Navigate the Modems –> USB Wireless Modem
Right click on the Uninstall.
Un-plug the Modem and restart the machine.
Plug the Modem, either of the following approaches would work for installation viz.,

The modem will install by itself and a message will be shown in the taskbar.
Open the location mentioned in the My Computer and Navigate to the installer inside the setup folder and install the application.

DELL Studio 14: My Review

My first impression: Looks Good.

The backlit keyboard is one of the main features I admire the most in a DELL Laptop PC.

Ease of use of the Keypad, Removal of the touch panel for the multimedia controls and including the functionalities into the Function keys is also a welcome note to me.

On the first boot, I found that the complete 500 GB of disk space is created into a single partition.

The Windows 7 is just an advancement of the Vista. Nothing much of difference I could make about for a daily use.

There is a office trial versio pre-installed.

Yes, I had a little confusion in mind if the configuration would be correct? Yes, DELL has kept up my expectations.

Another doubt I hd was if there is a provision to lock the Lap? Yes, there is a provision for it.

Verdict: Good machine for the money paid.

Improvements: Disk Partitioning option
