An unforgettable experience in the mountains

Being blessed to be born in a world without cell phones was a boon, more blessed are our generation who have seen the transformation in technology and got trained to adapt to the required transformations. But the most blessed are those who have been on a camp or a hike in their childhood days and I am one such blessed soul.

The air became thin and our bus came to a halt for a short break it was mid day and all if us were damn excited and tired at the same time and very eager to reach the campsite. There were veterans describing about their experiences on spotting a few animals, the does and dont’s, the flora and fauna and what not.. We had stopped in a mountain town..

Driving through the last few hairpin bends, the narrowing roads, we reached the Berijum Lake. The shores were clean, the air thin, the mercury taking a dip, the water well settled and clear, most importantly the adrenaline rushing up and down for this was the first time. This was just the beginning.

It was our first camping experience and added to it we had come out together with our friends away from home for a night stay accompanied by our teachers of course. we learn’t what sharing means the day when the tents were allotted. What did we share? Rugs.

Before that we were told that camping is all about team work, now we started experiencing it. Setting up the tent to make it livable especially during the night was a challenge. This was the first team task where we had literally used the 2 rugs for the floor and other two to cover us while sleeping. Thinking back and trying to do it now would be a little more difficult to achieve I presume.

The second day was the real challenge, walking in the shoals exploring the rich fauna. Getting a chance to feel what forest was like, taking a nap in the middle of the forest in the afternoon after a dip in the waterfall, meeting with new friends from other schools and the long trek. Here was the time were we saw carcass of a bison hunted by a tiger. Getting to see a variety of mushrooms and getting to pick a few on the way back to the camp were the tastiest.

The stream walk to the origin was a breathe taking experience that followed on the very next day. The pine forests were dripping with water droplets from the recent downpour since the rain gods had no mercy and this added the challenge of walking in the marshy terrain with dripping rain coats. This was the time we learned on how to break the step and follow the lead.

The final day was for spotting some wildlife but with no luck, this was a short walk to the other bank of the lake where there will come a chance for us to see any wildlife, here we all wondered were there anything wilder that us human beings?

We had no other choice than to return to our camp to have spotted just a few birds. The Kingfisher being a very common sight.

The camping experience was totally incomplete without the camp fire which a fellow camper will call a forest fire and make the camp director freeze. The art of mastering the perfect spot to sit to enjoy the camp fire was something to be mastered. Too close will mean too hot and too far you are cold, Against the wind again hot adjusting to the wind nearly impossible until finally a perfect circular audience was formed.

Each hour spent in the camp was learning something new, each talk was knowledge gained, each act we did was shaping up towards letting the EGO off..

Today when I see the Sholai hills from a distance, I am thankful for the very important lessons learnt and expecting to go camping once again…

Camping to me means learning unlimited..

My Cycling Time (From Birth - Till Date)

Not really sure if I can clock the time right but it would be a lot of time spent on my favorite machine "The Cycle". Right from the tri cycle, to the BMX series and the ranger model the time spent with the little feet on the pedal was just fun.

The Tri Cycle was great fun when riding indoors, the fun was greater when the outgrown kid rides the cycle. The seat will not fit, the knee would bend but imperfect to reach the pedal, the handlebar too small to hold one positive thing here would be the missing brakes.

Next comes the talent of riding the cycle in very small gaps, getting the hero feeling when the elders of the house tell us to be careful. The feeling today brings back very beautiful nostalgia.
The BMX was the next version, the best memory goes back here with uncles and cousins training me up. This was the cycle which introduced me to my extended family and made me understand what cousins really are.

Post mastering the balancing act, the next step was to take a glance of the overtaking vehicle on the side, those thrilling moments to take the eyes off road and land up in a ditch, thankfully it was  dry one. On mastering the ride, the next big what was the one wheeled ride (wheeling), hands free ride, bund jumps and the small races.

Outgrowing the BMX and getting bored with the same machine to ride daily and ofcourse changing with the trend was the ranger cycle as it was popularly called amongst us. Every kid in the locality was moving towards a ranger cycle and soon it was my time. Though it was difficult to part with the BMX, had to keep up with the trend.

This was the cycle of pure fun and long distance rides. The mountain foothills, the street shortcuts, the first dog chase, the transformation from adolescence to teenage, the ranger was truly “THE” Best Friend. The very same cycle that I still own and refuse to give up till date for the past 15 years.. The very same cycle which has been the best gadget of my life till date and will continue to be…

My cycling Nostalgia, to be continued..

Coimbatore Startups - 2015, July Meetup

Second Saturday of this Month, Tib corp, Excellence Towers was the venue and Sasi, Founder of Lyric Labs was the guest speaker at the Coimbatore Startups Meetup.

Saturday, July 11, 2015 people started walking in as early as 14:45 hours (I was told as I arrived a little later) and were busy with the pre-event networking. The meet-up started with an announcement from Arumugham.

After the initial round of introductions and the initial introduction by Sasi about the business that he runs and the way he started, there were a few questions taken up and answered;

Q: What were the Challenges you faced being a being a 1st gen entrepreneur?

MONEY came the reply without any hesitation. There were no big investors and I was narrowing down on the first client. Re-invest a portion of the earnings back in the business. This is the same way how traditionally business is being done. Stay away from investments wherever applicable.

Q: What is the real Pain point with the services being provided by the existing companies?

They were no organized and there was a big untapped market that could be serviced.

Q: Who was your inspiration as a Startup?

My uncle, who was running the business where I worked earlier.

Q: What are the challenges that you faced when you were in Coimbatore as a Startup?

We were unable to find the right resource for the job. We moved to Bangalore for that reason and have over 1500 free lancers working for us. To manage these freelancers, we have a team of about 40 people.

Q: How do you manage these freelancers in a huge number?

We make it a point that the pay cheque is not delayed to them. We were able to achieve this by getting onboard top-notch clients who never delay a pay cheque. To do this we had to get "ISO certified (ISO 9001 DIN EN 15038) on Translation Services" which gave us a push.

Q: A translator working with Lyric over a period of time get's a raise in the salary?

No, we actually reduce the salary for the translator. But he starts making more money. How is that possible? We increase the word count, since the translator becomes experienced and conversion rate increases. Also, we encourage mini-entrepreneurs and encourage the translators to form their own teams and get the translations done. Thus the translator starts earning 10 times more than the time when he starts.

Q: How do you Network?

Reading books and being an active member of the meet-up communities keeps me active and networked.

Key takeaways:

1. Encouraging Mini Entrepreneurship within organization.
2. Learn the way traditional businesses work.
3. Network more and be targeted

See you all for the nest meet-up. Thanks for reading through.

P.S: We meet on Second Saturday of every month to network and grow organically. Join our Facebook group for more updates also, get added to our telegram group.

Mobile Developer Summmit - Day#1

At the Mobile Developer Summit #mods;

1. Spark instilled on the apps possibilities
2. Ford Developer Program
3. New plans / Phases and ideas in the Automotive sector
4. Intel WiDi
5. Intel SDX
6. Intel HTML5 Development Tools

All this six packed pointers packed up in just 2 hours. A deep dive yet to come.

Visited the Ford and the Intel stalls to know about their developer events and the SDKs they provide which is a completely new insight. Another spark instilled to think is a different view for mobile solution / product to be integrated into a automobile. No ideas yet..!!

The Other Side to Usability

Any application UI should be Engaging, Well Styled, Effective, Easy to Learn
For the home page which takes time to load, we can use any of the following approach
    Progressive Loading
    Splash Screen
    Gamification screen
    Lazy Load
The best practice to develop a mobile app is (my opinion is for any web application);
    1. Ease the load on the UI thread.
    2. Use the Worker Thread / Process to do most of the processing.
    3. Cache the objects (Example: Images, JavaScript, StyleSheets). In HTML5 use the META file.
    4. Not over using OverDraw
    5. Themes; Inbuilt Themes - Build on them.
    6. Use a TimeStamp to clear the client cache.

Mobile OSes

This was a very interesting session on the different mobile OSes that are already in market or going to be in the market;

A few note points are;

  • Software vs Hardware
  • Market Share vs Profitability
  • Free SDK to Store pattern (Google)
  • Hardware to sell products (Amazon)
  • Selling the Software (Microsoft)
  • Google + Amazon => ?
  • Tizen Phones?
  • Fragmentation charts are a good input.
  • Multiple OSes on the same hardware an year away.
  • Firefox OS for phones. Should the HTML5 standard be emphasized???
  • Ubuntu Touch
  • Web OS
  • Apple OS

There were No canned solutions here only pointers to think.

Lunch arrangements were good with separate Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian counters with a sweet and ice-cream.

Firefox OS & the Power of HTML 5

The n/w was not good here. But the presentation by Soumya Deb was good giving an insight on the Firefox OS and how and what HTML5.

It was a honor attending this session sitting beside Scott Davis.

Tea Break, a confluence where there is a Tech Buzz of Mobi Geek terminologies lingering the air.

Develop, Optimize, Debug and Tune your Android Apps

Currently in this session by the person from the Intel team. Gave a good insight on the Intel Graphics hardware-software combination and the intel on power systems directly proportional to the performance.

Feedback for the MODS Organizers

  1. The Lunch can be boxed up and provided to manage the crowd better.
  2. A mobile app with a scheduler and remainder for the event would be great. BarCamp Bangalore Organizing Team can be the right point of contact for the consulting. They having run the app successfully for over 2 camps now.
Anticipating and Action Packed Day #2 tomorrow...

Signing off,
Naveen
